Our conference this year will take place on Saturday 7 September at St Columba’s Free Church on the theme ‘We Believe: Why the Creed Matters Today’
One writer described the two options facing the church as ‘creed or chaos’. The Bible instructs Christians to ‘follow the pattern of sound words’ (2 Tim 1:13) and ‘to contend for the faith once for all delivered to the saints’ (Jude 3).
This event will explore the most widely used summary of our faith, the Nicene Creed, which celebrates its 1700th anniversary next year. What role does the Creed play in our lives and in the Church? What does it mean to receive and confess the Creed, together with the Church of all times and places, in our particular rootless and consumerist age?
Speakers include Rev Dr Sinclair Ferguson (Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, Preaching Associate at Trinity Church Aberdeen), Dr Michael McClenahan (Principal and Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological College in Belfast), and ETS faculty.
The conference will explore such topics as:
- The articles of the Creed concerning the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
- Where the Creed comes from in Scripture and history
- The nature of orthodoxy and heresy
- The place of creeds in the Christian life and in the Church
- How the Creed helps us to address our culture
- The relation of song and devotion to doctrine, and vice versa
- Why Nicene Christianity matters so much today
